Five Ways to Live Out God’s Call to Simplicity

St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the “Little Flower,” once shared a profound insight into the heart of our faith: "Our Lord needs from us neither great deeds nor profound thoughts. Neither intelligence nor talents. He cherishes simplicity."

Yet, simplicity often feels difficult to achieve. Consider the average American home, bursting with about 300,000 items. Beyond material possessions, we’re burdened by digital overload—more than a hundred daily emails—and schedules crammed with commitments. These distractions weigh heavily on our hearts, steal our joy and hinder our ability to fully love and serve.

St. Therese of Lisieux quote

As St. Thérèse reminds us, simplicity is the key to a life centered on Christ. It’s a lifestyle that allows us to live lighter, shedding the unnecessary to make room for the eternal. Here are five steps to embrace this spiritual simplicity:

1. Fully Surrender

Psalm 119 reminds us that simplicity begins with living according to God’s Word. Surrendering to His guidance creates space for His voice in our daily decisions. A life rooted in scripture leads to clarity and peace.

2. Streamline Your Schedule

When you say "yes" to one thing, you inevitably say "no" to another. Simplifying your commitments helps you prioritize what truly matters. Whether it’s time with loved ones or moments in prayer, ensure your time reflects God’s priorities.

3. Spend Wisely

Finances can weigh on our souls, but when we acknowledge that all we have comes from God, it transforms our perspective. Stewarding our resources with gratitude and generosity allows us to give freely and bless others as God intended.

4. Strengthen Relationships

The Book of Proverbs encourages us to trust God, care for others and live as people of peace. Rooting our lives in love simplifies our relationships and aligns our actions with God’s will, fostering deeper connections with those around us.

5. Invest in Eternity

Adopting an eternal perspective can declutter how we live today. Many faithful individuals use resources like trusts, life insurance or charitable gifts to support missions that align with their values, such as your parish a Catholic school or other Catholic ministry through The Orange Catholic Foundation. By giving intentionally, you leave a legacy that reflects God’s love and transforms lives for generations.
